Flying as a family has become incredibly expensive.
Between airfare, transportation, food, and activities, vacations add up quickly — and baggage fees can easily become one more frustrating expense layered on top.
Over the past five years, our family has managed to avoid paying for extra checked bags by sticking to one suitcase for our summer vacations, including 7 day trips. Since many airlines charge around $80 per checked bag each way, that has added up to substantial savings for our family flying twice per year.
And honestly?
We really haven’t sacrificed much in the process.
At first, packing a family of four into a single suitcase sounded impossible to me. But once we developed a smarter system, it became surprisingly manageable — especially for warm-weather trips where clothing is lighter and simpler overall.
The biggest surprise has actually been this:
traveling lighter makes the entire vacation feel easier.
Less luggage means:
- less hauling through airports,
- less unpacking,
- less digging through piles of clothes,
- and honestly, less stress overall.
Vacation is supposed to help you relax, and packing lighter has genuinely helped us do that.
Here’s exactly how we make it work.

1. Start With the Right Suitcase
The very first step is choosing a suitcase that maximizes the size allowed by airlines while still staying lightweight itself.
If the suitcase is heavy before you even start packing, you lose valuable weight capacity immediately.
We specifically look for:
- lightweight construction,
- durable wheels,
- and a size that takes full advantage of airline checked baggage dimensions while staying within the weight limit.
Once you have the right suitcase, there is actually a surprising amount of usable space available for a family packing strategically for warm weather.

2. Packing Cubes Are Completely Worth It
Packing cubes honestly changed everything for us.
Without them, one large suitcase quickly turns into a chaotic pile where nobody can find anything. Packing cubes keep the suitcase organized, compress clothing slightly, and make it much easier to divide everyone’s belongings.
We usually assign each family member their own cube or color system so everything stays easy to identify.
The biggest benefit is that the suitcase remains functional throughout the trip instead of becoming a disaster after day one.

3. A Suitcase Scale Gives You Peace of Mind
There is nothing worse than arriving at the airport wondering if your bag is overweight.
A small suitcase scale completely removes the stress and guessing.
Before every trip, we weigh the suitcase at home so we know exactly where we stand before heading to the airport. This has saved us from a lot of anxiety — and potentially expensive overweight bag fees.
When you’re trying to maximize one suitcase for four people, knowing your exact weight matters.

4. Maximize the Airline’s “Free Personal Item”
This is one of our biggest strategies.
Most airlines allow every ticketed passenger to bring a free personal item onboard, and many people underutilize that allowance.
For example, women often carry a purse, but airlines typically permit each traveler to bring a full-size backpack as their personal item. (Always check your airline’s dimension requirements to confirm.)
Since we are a family of four, we bring:
- four backpacks,
which gives us a huge amount of additional storage without paying extra baggage fees.
One of our favorite tricks is using a cooler backpack as one of those personal items.
We use it as a regular backpack during the flight, but once we arrive, it doubles as a cooler bag for beach days, pool snacks, drinks, or park outings. It’s one of those items that earns its space because it serves multiple purposes during the trip.
We also often use one backpack specifically for shoes since shoes are one of the heaviest items to pack. And because they have so much space each one will also hold 1 of the packing cubes with room to still spare for all the things we want to use during the flight like tablets and snacks.

5. Pack Smart, Not Excessively
I’ll be honest — as a mom, I naturally want to bring extras “just in case.”
But over time I’ve realized that for warm-weather vacations, we truly need less than I think we do.
We focus on bringing:
- one pair of walking shoes (which we wear on the plane),
- one pair of dressier shoes,
- and one pair of beach or water shoes.
Wearing your heaviest shoes during travel days helps free up a surprising amount of suitcase space and weight.
For beach vacations, we especially love lightweight beach slippers that can be worn both in and out of the water to protect our feet without needing additional bulky sandals.

We also pack laundry detergent sheets so we have the option to run a quick load of laundry if needed during longer trips.
Are we hoping to spend vacation doing laundry?
Of course not.
But running one small load during the week feels like a much lighter burden than paying another $160 round-trip for an additional checked bag.
And honestly, most of the time we don’t even end up needing to wash much.

Final Thoughts
Packing a family of four into one suitcase definitely takes some strategy at first, but once you find a system that works, it becomes surprisingly freeing.
For us, the tradeoff has been completely worth it:
- saving money,
- traveling lighter,
- moving through airports more easily,
- and simplifying vacation overall.
Because the truth is:
less luggage often means less stress.
And when you’re on vacation, simpler really can be better.
